I have another weekend off work in Mexico and this time I’m spending it on the island of Holbox.

The island was settled by the Maya, who also gave it its name. Holbox comes from the Mayan language and means “black hole”. The name comes from the dark water in Yalahao Lagoon caused by mangrove areas. In 1856, Spaniards settled on Holbox and founded a town. I was there for the first time about 30 years ago. Back then it was still a small, quiet fishing village. Today the island is particularly popular with young tourists who want a simple, unconventional break.
